Ever wonder what Marco Island and its surrounds was like 100 hundred years ago?

In the first decade of the twentieth century, Julian Dimock and his father traveled throughout southwest Florida photographing the land, the people, and the waterways of this frontier Eden.

The former Wall Street moguls turned gentlemen explorers published hundreds of articles documenting their journeys in Harper’s, Field & Stream, and other periodicals, introducing Americans to the mysterious world of the Florida Everglades and its inhabitants. Their base camp was on the undeveloped outpost of Marco Island. From here, they trekked through the swamps and savannahs of the western Everglades by canoe and oxcart.

The exhibit features reproductions from their original glass negatives. These treasures were discovered in 1978, almost 50 years after the co;;ection was donated to the American Museum of Natural History. They preserve a rare and fascinating view of a primitive land, a land now offering sumptuous private homes – some of which are offered as vacation rentals by Marco Escapes – inviting beaches, luxurious hotels and an escape to sunshine and hospitality in a world of excellence.
